Appalachian Photographs by Earl Palmer Exhibit: My Friend Earl
(Arts)

Earl Palmer (1905-1996) was known as the "Blue Ridge Roamin' Photographer." For over 50 years he took pictures of the southern Appalachian Region that covered southwest Virginia, eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, northern Tennessee and North Carolina. Earl's images were published in Life, National Geographic and Saturday Evening Post. He was a local legend who was the Mayor of Cambria, Virginia for ten years and owned Palmer's Grocery. Virginia Tech's Appalachian studies program has loaned artifacts to the exhibit from Earl's collection. The photos in the exhibit at Perspective Gallery are on loan from the John Kline collection and include images of Earl's vision of Appalachian culture...strong, self-sufficient, and on the edge of transition.
