Will Schwalbe- "Why Books Matter"

On Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 4:00 in the multi-purpose room of Newman Library, the Literature and Language program welcomes its first visiting speaker of the year, Will Schwalbe, who will give a talk entitled "Why Books Matter".
Schwalbe is the author of the New York Times bestseller The End of Your Life Book Club (Knopf 2012), which has been translated into 12 languages. It was #1 Indie Next Pick,a Barnes and Noble "Discover Great New Writers" selection, and was #4 on Amazon's Top Ten Books of 2012. It received the "Books for a Better Life" Award for best inspirational memoir.
Schwalbe's newest work, Books for Living, will be published by Knopf in 2017. He is also co-author, with David Shipley, of Send: Why People Email So Badly and How to Do It Better (Knopf 2007). In 2008, Schwalbe founded the digital recipe company Cookstr. In December 2013, Cookstr was sold to Macmillan, where Schwalbe now works running Cookstr and serving as Executive Vice President, Editorial Development and Content Innovation.
After graduating from Yale in 1984 with a B.A. degree summa cum laude in Classical Civilization, went to Hong Kong where he wrote for publications including The New York Times and The South China Morning Post, and where he was associate editor of two travel magazines. He has served on the boards of Yale University Press, the Asian American Writers Workshop, the Hellman Hammett foundation and Kingsborough Community College. He was chair of the International Freedom to Publish Committee of the Association of American Publishers and was twice named a judge for the National Endowment for the Arts Literature Panel.
