Free Movie Nights: The Best Years of Our Lives
(Movie/Film)
This film recounts the problems faced by three returning veterans of WWII as they attempt to pick up the threads of their lives. Captain Derry is returning to a loveless marriage, Sergeant Stephenson is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him, and sailor Parrish is tormented by the loss of his hands. A classic American veterans' motion picture, this film is also deeply situated in the aftermath of "the greatest generation," who served in America's least controversial war. What narratives, whether veteran or civilian, are left out? How much agency do veterans have in reintegration?
The film is shown as part of an intensive three-week workshop for college and university faculty from around the United States to explore "Veterans in Society: Ambiguities and Representations," funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information about the workshop and other projects at Virginia Tech to encourage scholarship and engagement about veterans, see www.veteransinsociety.org More information...
