Free Movie Nights: Coriolanus
(Movie/Film)
In classical antiquity, citizenship and military service were often bound together. Shakespeare's historical tragedy about a victorious Roman general raises important questions about the liminal status of veterans. Can the great warrior be a good citizen? What does he owe the polity? What does the public owe him? Are those permanent questions, or do resolutions depend on personality on one side and culture on the other?
The film is shown as part of an intensive three-week workshop for college and university faculty from around the United States to explore "Veterans in Society: Ambiguities and Representations," funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information about the workshop and other projects at Virginia Tech to encourage scholarship and engagement about veterans, see www.veteransinsociety.org More information...
