Modern medicine has treatments and cures for a range of once fatal conditions, from breast cancer to smallpox, while the rates of some other diseases, like type-2 diabetes, are rising. Professor Thrailkill, UNC-Chapel Hill's Master's program in Literature, Medicine, and Culture, argues that where science has foundered, the humanities are uniquely equipped to step in.
