SIREN Seminar: David Mendonca -- Cognitive Strategies in Collaborative Improvisation: From Jazz to 9/11
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
David Mendonca is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research centers on the study of the cognitive processes that underlie human decision making in the management of critical infrastructure systems with a focus on understanding and supporting decision making in high consequence, non-routine, time-pressured situations, especially in the post-disaster environment.
In his presentation, "Cognitive Strategies in Collaborative Improvisation: From Jazz to 9/11," Mendonca will demonstrate the salience of cognitive task analysis in framing understanding of processes of improvisation. He will engage data from observational studies in music performance and simulated emergency response, framed by work in the field, to sketch out a computable cognitive theory of improvisation. Mendonca will then illustrate how results from this work may be employed to generate predictions about data.
Graduate students are encouraged to arrive at 11:30 a.m. to chat with the speaker.
Live streaming of this event is available to registered attendees.
