Since 1987, George Briggs has served as executive director of the North Carolina Arboretum, an affiliate institution of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system. He has guided development of the Arboretum through over $35 million in capital development and oversees annual budgets exceeding $4 million, 60 employees, and 400 volunteers. The North Carolina Arboretum attracts 500,000 visitors annually and implements place-based strategies in a variety of economic sectors.
