Dr. Davis has written widely on the Appalachian environment. He was the recipient of the Southern Environmental Center's Phillip D. reed Memorial Award for Outstanding Writing on the Southern Environment for his book "Where There are Mountains: An Environmental History of the Southern Appalachians."
