SIREN Seminar: Patricia L. Eng
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
Patricia L. Eng, independent consultant and former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) senior advisor for Knowledge Management until she retired in 2013, will discuss "Extending Knowledge 'Half-Life:" The NRC's Knowledge Management Program.
In 2006, the NRC found itself with increasing retirements, losing 4,000 experienced people every year. Fifty percent of its staff had less than five years of experience. NRC executives decided that it was time to create a Knowledge Management program and allocated one staff person and $50,000 for the first year with $10,000 a year thereafter. According to NRC estimates, the program saved the Commission 37 million dollars in 2009, and an additional 22 million dollars in 2010 in operating costs. As a result, the NRC received the 2010 Merit Award for streamlining government operations through its Knowledge Management program.
Eng will discuss how the NRC built its Knowledge Management program; the program's tactics and initiatives; and the program's impact on Emergency Response and Post-911 security initiatives. She will also offer comparative observations on nuclear Knowledge Management programs in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Graduate students are encouraged to arrive at 11:30 a.m. to chat with the speaker.
