"I miss school because there are no latrines"--Exploring the real costs of poor sanitation facilities for schoolgirls in Africa
(Special Event)
How can a normal fact of life marginalize half the world's population? In countless cultures and societies across the globe, a taboo surrounds menstruation and women's hygiene needs. Nneoma Nwankwo's presentation will address the cultural and practical barriers to good menstrual hygiene using examples from her work with young women in Nigeria and with the UN Women and Sanitation Ministries in Niger. She will comment on what can be done to improve these issues and how the audience can become engaged. Nneoma is a senior majoring in Political Science and double minoring in Urban Planning and English. She is from Lagos, Nigeria, and is interested in urban infrastructure, politics, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Nneoma is a 2014 Cloyd Fellow.
