What We Talk about When We Talk about Pools: Controversies in America and Israel
(Academic)
When the mercury rises, people flock to bodies of water. Yet the visual intimacy of bathing also brings together different groups who wouldn't normally mix outside of the water, sparking tensions that have resulted in protests and violence. In this lecture, Dr. Shayna Weiss will compare controversies about integration in swimming pools in America and Israel, revealing surprising insights about the intersections of race, gender, and class.
Dr. Shayna Weiss is the Schlesinger Family Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Tel Aviv University in Israel. She received her Ph.D. from New York University in Hebrew and Judaic Studies. Her manuscript, "A Beach of Their Own: The Origins of Gender Segregation in the Israeli Public Sphere," examines controversies about mixed and separate swimming in Israel as a lenses to understand conflicts of religion, gender and state. At Tel Aviv University, Dr. Weiss researches gender segregation in Israel and teaches courses on Israeli society. She is from Jacksonville, Florida.
