Center for the Arts Summer Exhibitions
(Arts)
The Center for the Arts features three exhibitions for the summer:
TANGLED: PAT WEST
Ruth C. Horton Gallery
A journey through landscape-both real and metaphoric-is the subject of Tangled, a one-person exhibition of paintings by Pat West. An established artist throughout Blacksburg and the New River Valley, West is well known for her bold, richly textured, expressionistically rendered paintings. Thick paint and vigorous brushstroke lend a density to works that exude vitality-intense and ever present-all the while interlaced with portentous traces of chaos. Movement, insistent and relentless, conveys a beautiful, though restless and complicated world of exterior landscapes in nature, while suggesting a complexity of interior landscapes in the mind and heart. Curated by Margo Ann Crutchfield, curator at large.
WANDERINGS: CHARLOTTE CHAN, MARIE COLLIER, AND BETTY MOORE
Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery
This exhibition presents oil paintings, watercolor, and oil pastel works on paper by Charlotte Chan, Marie Collier, and Betty Moore. Each of these artists draws from a depth of individual experience to represent visions of the evanescent world of the garden, fields, and rolling hills with a heightened sensitivity to and adept use of color, skilled technique, and astute observation. Chan, Moore, and Collier live and work in Blacksburg, Virginia. Curated by Lauren Henson, graduate assistant, in collaboration with Margo Ann Crutchfield, curator at large.
UNLEASHED
Sherwood Payne Quillen '71 Reception Gallery
Unleashed explores the written word as visual art. Poetry by local writers and Virginia Tech students and faculty is freed from the confines of the page. Selected works of poetry and short prose explore concepts related to paradise, refuge, and the garden; exhibition designers then reimagine the written words as visual elements that interrupt, envelop, and meander throughout the Moss Arts Center exhibition spaces. An experiment in collaboration, design, and interpretation, Unleashed presents words and language as a visual and dimensional experience, inviting viewers to move through text and space simultaneously. This multi-disciplinary exhibition also features an evening of readings by participating writers. Curated by author Matthew Vollmer, assistant professor, Department of English, Virginia Tech; and designed by Meggin Hicklin, curatorial assistant, Center for the Arts, and material culture and public humanities MA candidate, School of Performing Arts and Cinema, Virginia Tech.
