  LISA Statistics Short Course: Designing Experiments
(Academic)

LISA SHORT COURSES IN STATISTICS
LISA (Virginia Tech's Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. See www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=short_courses for instructions on how to REGISTER and to learn more.

Spring 2015 Schedule:
Monday & Tuesday, February 16 & 17: Basics of R;*
Monday & Tuesday, February 23 & 24: Graphics in R;*
Tuesday, March 3: Multivariate Analysis in R;
Tuesday, March 17: Designing Experiments;
Monday & Tuesday, March 23 & 24: Using ggplot2 to produce enhanced graphics in R;*
Tuesday, April 7: T-tests & ANOVA;
Tuesday, April 14: Solutions for Broken Linear Models;
*Two sessions to accommodate more attendees.

Tuesday, March 17;
Instructor: Justin Loda;
Title: Designing Experiments;

Course Information:
The goal of any scientific experiment is to maximize information gain, while simultaneously minimizing the cost of the experiment. A well-designed experiment can help the researcher obtain this goal and increase the chance of obtaining significant results. This short course will discuss the three fundamental principles of experimental design (randomization, replication, and local control of error) and their relative importance in designing a useful experiment. To help illustrate these principles, we will work with the Paint Hardness data set, which can be found on the Minitab website. We will also discuss some commonly designed experiments, such as randomized complete block and split-plot designs, as well as describe some more advanced designs which may be of interest. Any and all who have little to no background in basic statistical techniques and are interested in acquiring a short introduction to experimental design are invited to attend this lecture session.
