Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute
Roanoke, Virginia

James Smyth, PhD, a cardiovascular scientist at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, will continue Heart School on Feb. 17 with an exploration of the micromachinery of the heart. Smyth will discuss how individual heart muscle cells contract and how electrical signals spread over thousands of cells through special junctions. He will address cardiac abnormal patterns of electrical activity and how the heart responds at the cellular level to stress, diet, exercise, and smoking.

Dr. Smyth is an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute's Center for Heart and Regenerative Medicine Research. He completed his doctorate degree in virology at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Most recently, he was a postdoctoral project scientist in the Robin Shaw Laboratory at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles.
