From Then to Now: An Exhibition in Two Parts about April 16th
(Day of Remembrance)
The University Libraries, in partnership with Student Centers and Activities and Ashley Maynor's Self-Reliant Film, present this two-part exhibit.
Part I of the exhibit will feature digital displays of photos sent in by community members, faculty, and staff following April 16, 2007, and photos of the Hokies United memorials. The displays will also show two movies by Ashley Maynor: a home movie of the early Drillfield Memorial and footage from Maynor's film in progress, The Story of the Stuff, which explores how we collectively mourn and memorialize in a time where tragedies are experienced "first hand-once removed" on the web and television.
For Part II of the exhibit, Special Collections will open its doors to host a physical display of items from its April 16 Condolence Collection.
The two parts show how the creative process helped many move towards healing and created a path out of the darkness of grief.
An opening reception with light refreshments will be held Friday, April 11, from 12-1 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
