Collaborative Teaching: An Interdisciplinary Journey (Pedagogy in Practice Workshop Series)
(Academic)
Higher education is one of the most fruitful settings to experience teaching and learning innovation. One particular example of this innovation comes in the form of interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Virginia Tech. As CALS faculty, we have been challenging ourselves to develop and implement interdisciplinary curricula through the new Civic Agriculture and Food Systems Minor (CAFS). This minor uniquely enables students to critically identify, examine, and integrate sustainable agriculture and food system concepts and skills through active engagement in and outside the classroom. A key ingredient in reaching this goal is to provide students with learning experiences that support this inherently multifaceted, interdisciplinary program of study. In this workshop, we will provide an overview of the CAFS minor, share specific teaching strategies that leverage knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines and perspectives, and engage in group discussion about the strengths and challenges of interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching. Examples of topics include didactic and experiential learning methods, reflective practice through ePortfolio and writing assignments, and developing community-based projects through service learning.
