Therapeutic Strategies for Mitochondrial Disorders

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of mammalian cells, as they metabolize nutrients to produce the energy in the form of ATP. Mitochondrial dysfunction is caused by genetic mutations that ultimately impair mitochondrial ATP production. Consequently, the high energy demanding tissues - such as the nervous system, skeletal muscle, and heart - are predominantly, but not exclusively, affected. There is currently no cure for mitochondrial disorders. Dr. Srivastava's research interests are focused on understanding the mammalian mitochondrial bioenergetics and function, with particular emphasis on the design and discovery of novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of mitochondrial disorders. She will describe and discuss data she has generated that holds promise for the future development of potentially effective treatment strategies. The long-term goal of Dr. Srivastava's research is to understand and identify the novel signaling pathways that can improve mitochondrial dysfunction during disease and aging.
