Social Media for Higher Education
(Academic)
The social media landscape has exploded in the past couple of years. These outlets allow users to quickly communicate personal and professional information to carefully selected audiences or to the public in general, as well as a point of interaction with followers. Many businesses, professionals, and educators are turning to these resources to aid in maximizing exposure to scholarly ideas, research, professional information, and for collaboration with other colleagues and students. As members of a higher education community, many of us have heard of and probably have accounts with one or more social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and Blogger. The question is are we utilizing these powerful platforms to their fullest potential in classes or with other colleagues? Do we know how? In this presentation, we will examine the pros and cons of several social media sites; explore the technical aspects of their utilization; and their pedagogical significance in higher education. Time will be left at the end of the presentation to discuss the practical application of the highlighted social media tools and for those wanting further guidance on setting up accounts. This course is open to all faculty, staff and graduate students. More information...
