Sustainable Development and Future Generations in Nepal
(Special Event)
The College of Natural Resources and the Environment and the Office of International Research, Education, and Development (OIRED) welcome to campus Dr. Mike Rechlin, the new Dean of the Future Generations Graduate School. He coordinates an international graduate program that blends three instructional modes: on-site field residentials for one month each (in Peru, Nepal, India, and Appalachia), online learning, and an applied practicum (thesis) project in each student's community. In addition, Dr. Rechlin serves as a partner in the Virginia Tech and Institute of Forestry (Nepal) five-year program, the Memorial Center of Excellence, in recognition of the 25 natural resources conservation leaders that lost their lives in 2007.
Dr. Rechlin has spent many years living and working in Nepal and the region, and will share his experiences meeting with faculty and students while on campus.
Dr. Rechlin will be giving a seminar at 3 p.m. in Room 315 Cheatham Hall on Thursday, December 8, 2011. We ecnourage students and faculty interested in sustainable development and this novel educational model to attend.
Please contact Dr. Hammett (231-2716; himal@vt.edu) if you have questions; visit the Future Generations website for more details on the program (www.future.edu). More information...
